    Hello @Sadie

First, I would like to quickly review a few key points

    • When you join or make a call in Microsoft Teams, both the microphone and camera cannot be turned on.
    • The microphone and camera controls appear in light gray, and when you try to select them, a prohibition symbol is shown, preventing activation.

Second, to better understand the situation and help identify the root cause, could you please confirm the following:

    • Are you using the Microsoft Teams desktop application or the web version in a browser?
    • When you move your mouse pointer over the grayed out microphone or camera button, do you see any message or notification displayed?
    • Does this occur in every Teams meeting and call, or only in a specific meeting or call?
    • If you open the Windows "Camera" app, does the camera work normally there?

Along the way, I will also share a few simple steps you can try to double‑check what might be happening on your end.

1/ Check Windows camera and microphone permissions

If Windows does not allow Teams to access the camera or microphone, Teams may display the controls as unavailable.

    • Press "Windows + I" to open "Settings".
    • Select "Privacy & Security".
    • Select "Camera" from the left panel.
    • Make sure "Camera access" is turned On.
    • Make sure "Let apps access your camera" is turned On.

Repeat the same check under "Microphone" and ensure access is enabled.

2/ Verify the devices are detected in Teams

If Teams cannot detect a microphone or camera, the controls may appear unavailable during calls.

    • Open Microsoft Teams.
    • Select "Settings and more" (three dots) in the top-right corner.
    • Select "Settings".
    • Select "Devices".
    • Under "Audio devices", check whether a microphone is listed.
    • Under "Camera", check whether a camera is listed.

Your camera and microphone should appear in the device lists.

For your reference: Manage your device settings in Microsoft Teams

If you get stuck while trying the steps above, please share a screenshot or provide more detailed information. I will check the situation and continue to support you.

    Kind regards,

This usually means Windows or the browser is blocking Teams from using the microphone and camera, or the browser site permission is set to block them.

    Try this in order:

    1. In Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
      • Turn on Microphone access.
      • Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
      • Turn on Microsoft Teams (work or school) if it appears.
      • Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
      • If these were already on, turn them off and back on.
    2. In Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
      • Turn on Camera access.
      • Turn on Let apps access your camera.
      • Turn on Microsoft Teams if it appears.
      • Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera if using the desktop app or browser.
    3. Close Teams completely and reopen it. If it still stays gray, restart Windows.
    4. If using Teams on the web, allow the site in the browser:
      • In the Teams page, select the lock/site permissions icon next to the address bar.
      • Set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
      • Refresh the Teams page and rejoin the call.
    5. In Microsoft Edge, check browser permissions:
      • Go to Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions.
      • Open Microphone and turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
      • Open Camera and turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
    6. If the microphone still does not work, check the Windows input device:
      • Open Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Input, make sure the correct microphone is selected in Choose your input device.
      • Speak and verify Test your microphone detects sound.
    7. If the camera shows a blocked symbol or privacy icon, check for a physical camera shutter, privacy slider, or keyboard privacy key on the laptop. Also test the built-in Camera app. If the Camera app is also blocked, the issue is outside Teams.

If the controls are gray only in the browser, the browser permission is the most likely cause. If they are gray in the desktop app too, Windows privacy settings are the first place to fix.
