Microsoft Azure SQL データベースは、Build 2014 にて Premium の機能強化が発表されており、この度プレビュー利用が開始されることと合わせて、サービス体系が変更になることがアナウンスされました。
これまでの Web Edition (~5GB) / Business Edition (~150GB) + Premium という体系から、Basic (基本) / Standard (標準) / Premium (プレミアム) の3つのカテゴリーに変更となります。Web / Business Edition は 1 年後 (2015 年 4 月) に廃止され、利用中のデータベースは Basic / Standard / Premium のいずれかに移行となります。
現在は、Web / Business は正式リリース、 Basic / Standard / Premium はプレビューとしてご利用いただけます。
Basic / Standard / Premium の 3 つのカテゴリーは、DB サイズ、復元ポイント (Self-Service Restore) 、レプリケーション、パフォーマンス(トランザクションレート) が異なります。

ちなみに SQL 型データベースとして Azure Web サイトなどでお馴染みの MySQL データベース、Azure ストアから ClearDB より提供される無料および有料の MySQL データベースサービスも利用できます。
NoSQL データベースとしては Azure ストレージ(テーブル) をご用意していますが、OSS の MongoDB を利用することも可能です。MongoLab より提供されるデータベースサービスとして Azure ストアから利用でき、無料試用版も用意されています。Highly-Available (高可用性) MongoDB として、メモリが増強(～ 56GB)され 、マルチゾーンへのレプリケーションによる自動フェイルオーバーに対応したプランが追加されています。
