What's new with pay-as-you-go services in Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 continues to expand its pay-as-you-go offerings, giving your organization more flexibility and control over how you use and pay for services. This article highlights the latest updates, including improvements to the admin experience and newly available services.

Edit Billing Policy

  • Security group editing for pay-as-you-go billing policies. Admins can now update the security group associated with an existing pay-as-you-go billing policy, allowing changes to user-level scoping without recreating the policy. This capability enables more flexible management of pay-as-you-go billing policies as organizational access requirements evolve.

Copilot capacity pack without pay-as-you-go

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot now supports standalone capacity pack usage, enabling organizations to consume prepaid Copilot Credits without requiring pay-as-you-go billing. With this update, administrators can create Copilot Credit Policies that allocate prepaid capacity pack usage to specific departments or user groups. This feature enables departmental billing scenarios, allowing organizations to scope Copilot usage to defined teams and manage consumption from a shared pool of prepaid credits.

High volume email

  • A pay-as-you-go Exchange Online service for line of business applications and devices that send large volumes of automated, transactional, or operational internal email. High volume email (HVE) uses dedicated service accounts to keep system email separate from user mailboxes and protect service health. With pay as you go billing, you pay only for the number of expanded recipients in emails sent through HVE. To learn more about HVE, see Manage High Volume Email for Microsoft 365.

Enhanced navigation and user experience

  • Streamlined setup and management. Setting up and managing pay-as-you-go services is now easier than ever. The Microsoft 365 admin center has a more intuitive layout. The entry point for activating pay-as-you-go services moved from the Setup node to the Billing node. To find the new Pay-as-you-go menu, go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and select Billing > Pay-as-you-go. This change provides a more centralized and logical location for managing both billing and service activation.

  • Simplified Azure subscription and resource group creation. Your organization can now set up Azure subscription and resource group for billing policies directly within the pay-as-you-go billing creation experience. This integration means you don't have to jump to the Azure portal to set up subscriptions and resource groups. This change simplifies billing policy creation experience.

New pay-as-you-go services

  • SharePoint agents. These AI-powered assistants help users interact with SharePoint sites and document libraries. They can answer questions, summarize content, and perform tasks based on user permissions. Organizations can now enable SharePoint agents on a pay-as-you-go basis. No full Copilot license required.

  • Agents in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. These conversational agents allow users to interact with their work data by using natural language. They can answer questions, perform actions, and provide insights by using data from Microsoft Graph and other sources. By using pay-as-you-go billing, you pay only for the messages used.
