At first mine didn't work. But I really had to push to get the cord to plug into the headset the first time.
Wired In Line Microphone on the Surface Headphones 2 not working
Recently bought Surface Headphones 2. Tried using the headphones in wired mode with the included cable but the microphone wouldn't work. Checked with a second windows device to see if the problem persisted and it did. I thought I might have gotten a dud until I remembered that Apple EarPods (with 3.5 mm) had the same problem.
With the Apple headset, the microphone wouldn't work with windows (or other devices like Xbox controller) because the microphone and headphone rings on the connector were swapped around. So I tested my theory (on my Surface Headphones) with my iPhone and sure enough, the microphone worked with it.
I'm not sure if this was an intentional design for the headphones or if I just got a manufacturing defect. You would think that they would have made it the other way around since they would want you to use it with a windows or android device as well.
Has anyone else run into this issue and is there any way to fix it? (other than buying a new mic)

2021-01-26T04:44:01+00:00 Hello OverAardvark215,
Thanks for posting your concern here. We're sorry to learn that you're having an issue with the microphone on Windows.
First, we need to ensure that your Surface Headphones 2 are updated. Update your headphones here. Please try to check if the microphone was set up correctly. See How to set up and test microphones in Windows 10 for more details. Also, check if the host device enabled the privacy for microphone and other connected device. See Windows 10 camera, microphone, and privacy to find out how. Once finished set up, test the microphone again.
After performing the above mentioned, if the issue still persists even to several host devices, then it's potentially related to a hardware failure on the headphones. For any hardware concern, kindly contact Microsoft Surface Support to seek options for your headphones. If you're located outside United States, see Global Support.
