Using style separator is causing the numbering to disappear when in Print Layout view

I am using the first level of numbering -- Heading 1 to format my document. I am adding a style separator after the first period and as soon as the style separator is added, my numbering disappears. If I change my view to draft, I can see the number. In Print Layout view, I cannot. I also cannot see it in Print Preview. For example, my paragraph looks like this:

Sale and Purchase. This is a sale and purchase agreement. This is the rest of the paragraph and blah blah blah.

This is formatted in Heading 1 style. As soon as I add the style separator after Sale and Purchase. the 1. disappears. This is happening in a brand new document, in an existing document and with different numbering. I can see the number is still there when I switch to draft view, but in page layout view or Print Preview, the number is missing.

This can be replicated across multiple machines as well.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Which version are you using? I am not seeing this in release 2512 in Word for Windows from Office 365.

The screenshot is from Print View. I inserted the Style Separator using the keyboard shortcut and also using a QAT button while inside the first paragraph. I tried with a multilevel list and with a single level list.

I also tried simply typing and formatting a single sentence with numbering and pressing the Style Separator after the period. No problem. The Separator is there and I am positioned to type in my Body Text style. Body Text is my default style. https://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/3StylesFormatText.htm#Addendum

My Word just updated yesterday. I'm in Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2512 Build 16.0.19530.20144) 64-bit. No matter what I do, as soon as I insert the style separator, the number disappears. I just typed this.

Yes, I'm seeing the same results in safe mode. The numbers show in the table of contents, but not in the document in any paragraphs that have a style separator.

Thank you all for this! I was working on a doc for a new client and couldn't figure out why all of a sudden the style separator was removing the numbers. Luckily I figured that out yesterday, as I just had ANOTHER client call me this morning in a panic because the template I built for him months ago the numbers were suddenly disappearing. I hope Microsoft is paying attention to this, but in the meantime I have to back out of this update for both myself and figure out how to walk him through how to back his out (he's on a Mac).

The downgrading worked. It just removed all the color and font themes, but I can live with that. :)

I found that saving the .docx document to the older .doc format resolves this issue. The numbers reappear, numbering is restored.

I have been following this issue here and on other vendor and legal technology boards. A new work-around was posted from one of our vendors, DocStyle. They say to try:
- Work in Draft Layout while editing
- Turn on Track Changes to print or PDF
- Turn off Track Changes then save or send the file.
So, it seems that turning on Track Changes makes the numbers of the affected Outline Numbering levels reappear.

That worked for me. Thank you. I am afraid I can't share the document as it is an exam.

I can reproduce this. I format a text paragraph as a numbered Heading 1. As soon as I add the style separator, the heading number disappears. It is still present in the formatting, though, because it does show up if I create a table of contents. See the screen shot below.

I did my test in version 2512 of Word (perpetual license, specifically Office 2021).

At a later stage, I was able to reproduce the issue in my subscription version of Word as well.

I recommend that you report this using the Help > Feedback > Report a problem command in Word.

Style Separator seems to be in a state of flux. I believe you and others have commented on its fragility. The best thing to do may be to update very cautiously and be willing to revert (not a pleasant process, but doable) when it doesn't work.

I noticed the following:

The issue occurs when a second Style Separator is inserted.

If I enable Show/Hide, the numbers appear in Page Layout.

If you delete the title marks, all numbers appear. Strangely as you delete each style separator individually, the number appears and hides the previous one.

Something changed in the code for the paragraph separator. behavior

Saving the document to a 97-2003 .doc file seems to resolve the issue. It instantly fixed the issue, or allowed me to rebuild the document .
