how do I fix a white cursor/mouse/cell selector in office apps?

Yesterday when I logged into my computer, Word, Excel, and Outlook had cursor/mouse changes. It is automatically white making it very difficult to see when trying to select text (Word, Outlook) or choose a cell (Excel). I've scoured forums and googled solutions, but nothing works universally. For example, I changed my Windows 11 mouse settings to "black", but that didn't fix the apps. How do I fix this so I can see the darn thing? And why did this happen to begin with?

I can't even screenshot it, but in Word, my mouse arrow is white when off the paper and therefore completely invisible when on the paper. Same for Excel. Here are a couple of actual photos of my screen.

Word: mouse arrow circledUser's image

Excel: this is over an image that I had inserted into Excel, to demonstrate that the selection cross is nearly impossible to see and the mouse, which is actually in the red circle too, is invisible.User's image

Also Excel: I filled in a cell to show the white selection cross. It is completely invisible in a white cell.User's image

    Hello dawn r,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum

I understand that yesterday when you logged into your computer, Word, Excel, and Outlook had cursor changes to white, making it very difficult to work with for you.

Here is a method to change the text select cursor you can try:

    • Press Win + R > Type main.cpl > Enter
    • Go to the Pointers tab
    • Under Customize, select Text Select
    • Click Browse
    • Choose beam_r.cur
    • Apply > OK

This forces Windows to use a high-contrast text cursor

Try this method then reply back to this post to update me on the situation, I'll be happy to help.

It is baffling how such bug can get into production out of "nowhere", but either way, this is what fixed it for me:

    Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration

    • Open any Microsoft Office app, go to File > Options.
    • Select Advanced. Under Display, uncheck Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
    • Restart the Office application and check if the cursor issue persists.
