    Dear @Eeswar Atluri

Thank you for outlining the issue. I understand how inconvenient it can be when you are unable to add comments to a task in the Tasks app in Microsoft Teams. The message you are seeing, “The group isn’t set up to receive messages from you”, usually indicates that the group’s email settings are preventing your comment from being delivered.

Please see the following workarounds that will help you verify the issue:

Option 1: Send a test email to the group’s email address

Send a test email to the Team’s group address (the same group that owns the plan). If the message bounces, the bounce code can indicate the underlying cause:

    • 5.7.124 means the group is restricted to specific senders or only group owners.
    • 5.7.193 means the group only allows authenticated or internal senders, and your account may be treated as external.

Option 2: Confirm that you can access Outlook on the web

Please sign in your account at https://www.office.com/ > Apps > Outlook.

Task comments rely on the existence of an Exchange Online mailbox.  If your account does not have a mailbox, comments cannot be posted.

Option 3: Reach out to your IT administrator for verification

    1/ Remove restrictive delivery settings

This typically fixes issues related to bounce code 5.7.124.

    Open the Exchange Admin Center.

Go to Recipients > Select Groups.

Choose the group > Open Settings.

Under Delivery management, ensure the group is not restricted to owners or a specific sender list.

Add your account as an allowed sender if needed, or allow all internal senders.

2/ Allow the group to receive mail if your account is treated as external

This typically resolves bounce code 5.7.193.

As a group owner (Outlook groups):

    Open the group settings.

Enable “Let people outside the organization email the group.”

    From the Exchange Admin Center:

Open Groups > Select the group > Open Settings.

Enable “Allow external senders to email this group”.

Note: This may take up to one hour to apply.

    3/ Contact Microsoft Support

If the issue still persists, I sincerely recommend reaching out to your IT administrator to create a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Support > Help & Support for further investigation.

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

As community moderators, we kindly ask for your understanding that our access to internal development details is limited. Our primary role is to guide users toward the appropriate resources and support channels. While we may not have visibility into performing deeper backend analysis, we’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of our responsibilities.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions or need further support, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The message indicates that the Microsoft 365 Group behind the plan or task cannot receive messages from the account that is trying to comment. Planner task comments in Basic plans are stored and transported through the plan’s Microsoft 365 Group mailbox in Exchange Online. If that group mailbox cannot accept mail from the account, comments cannot be added.

To restore the ability to comment on tasks in Teams/Planner (Basic plans), the Microsoft 365 admin must ensure all of the following are true for the affected user and group:

    1. The organization is using Exchange Online for the user account.
    2. The underlying Microsoft 365 Group for the plan (for example, “VirtualDesignandConstruction”) is allowed to receive messages from this user (no restrictions on who can send to the group).
    3. The plan is not a Connected Yammer Group plan (comments are not supported there).
    4. There is no mail flow or directory conflict (for example, duplicate SMTP addresses) that would prevent messages from the user from being delivered to the group mailbox.

If the environment is using Premium plans and the plan is pinned to a Teams channel via the Project app, use Teams conversations for tasks instead of Planner comments.

If comments still cannot be added after these checks, provide the error details to the Microsoft 365 administrator so they can review Exchange Online and group settings.
