When closed the gap between the lid and base making opening it up to use the laptop very difficult. How can this be improved?
How sad. A very small removal of an edge of the system during manufacture would make opening a lot easier for the finger tip.

Instead of trying to pry from the very front center:
Hold the base with one hand
Use your fingernail at the front corner (left or right edge)
Apply a slight sideways lift
Corners usually have slightly more tolerance than the center
A thin, discreet adhesive tab (like those used on cable tidies) placed on the underside of the lid near the front edge gives you something to grip without damaging the device. Virtually invisible when closed.
Thank you. However, I am always told by my local engineer to about damage always apply the pressure to open centrally. I thought I might glue a small piece of plastic to the top and bottom edges to give my finger something to pull them apart on.
The hinge and lid gap on Surface Laptop models is fixed by the hardware design and is not adjustable through software. If the gap is so small that opening the device is difficult, there is no supported end‑user adjustment procedure in the provided material.
The only supported way to change hinge or lid alignment is during hardware service (for example, when replacing the display assembly or enclosure). Those procedures require disassembly, special tools, and specific alignment checks (such as using plastic thickness gauges and refastening hinge screws in a defined sequence), and are intended for authorized service providers or skilled technicians, not for routine user adjustment.
To improve usability without hardware adjustment:
If opening remains unreasonably difficult, the device should be inspected by an authorized service provider, who can check hinge alignment and enclosure fit and, if necessary, perform a display or enclosure service using the documented procedures.
