wondering what model of surface laptop I have

The surface laptop my son received had the battery die on it while doing a factory reset. We were unaware that the charger we had hooked up wasn't working properly. It was given to him from his mother and after doing a little research we found that the charger he was given was not the right one. We purchased the proper charger only to find that now the laptop doesn't turn on at all. The charging light does come on while charging but that is it. We are hoping to find out what actual model the laptop is so we can look for some specific service guides to do some additional troubleshooting? The only thing we have that might help with determining the model is the serial number off the back which is [moderator's note: PII removed].

Any help with finding the model would be beneficial. And any additional information in regard to what might actually be wrong with the device would also be helpful. The reason for the factory reset was because when we turned it on the first time it entered to a BitLocker warning screen that asked for a BitLocker password. His mother had no recollection of any BitLocker passwords, and after reading online that not having the password would require a factory reset she did the factory reset to clean the hard drive.

I’ve hidden your personal information in your post to help keep your details safe and protect your privacy.

    Hi Dominick McLeod,

I can understand that situation sounds frustrating, especially with the reset getting interrupted and then the device not powering on afterward.

Since the laptop won’t boot, the easiest way is to identify the model online using the serial number:

    • Sign in to your Microsoft account and open your Devices page: Find out which Surface model you have | Microsoft Support
    • If you don’t see the Surface listed, choose Register device and enter the serial number.
    • Once it’s registered, select the device and open Info & support to view the Surface model information.

These are safe, recommended checks for a Surface that won’t start:

    1. Basic power reset + charging
    • Disconnect any accessories (USB drives, SD card, external monitor, etc.).
    • Plug the device into the correct power supply and leave it charging for at least 15 minutes.
    • After charging, press and hold the Power button for about 20 seconds to force a restart, then release and press Power again.
    1. If it might be a “black screen / sleep” state
    • With the keyboard attached/available, try this wake shortcut: Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.

To narrow this down, could you share a few details?

    • When you press Power, do you see anything (logo, backlight, keyboard light, fan sound), or is it completely blank?
    • Is the charger LED solid the whole time, or does it blink / turn off at times?
    • About how long has it been left charging with the correct charger (15 minutes / 1 hour / longer)?
    • After charging, have you tried the force restart (hold Power about 20 seconds) while it’s plugged in?

If you’re able to identify the model and the laptop starts up but lands on a BitLocker recovery screen, please update me. Once you share that, I’ll provide the most fitting steps to try next based on your situation.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I’ll break this into three clear parts:

    1. How to identify the exact Surface model from the serial number
    2. What is most likely wrong with the device
    3. What you can realistically try next (and what usually won’t help)
    4. Identify model: Use Microsoft’s Surface warranty lookup page and enter the serial number: https://mybusinessservice.surface.com/en-US/CheckWarranty/CheckWarranty
    5. Have you already performed an UEFI attempt?
      1. Plug in charger
      2. Hold Volume Up
      3. While holding Volume Up, press Power once
      4. Keep holding 15 seconds If you see anything, even a black screen flash, that’s a good sign.
    6. if it's out of warranty:
      • Microsoft replacement cost is often high
      • Battery replacement can fix this on some generations
      • HOWEVER: Surface Laptops are glued and require full teardown
      • iFixit service guides are model‑specific (do not attempt without knowing the exact model)

    if it's still under warranty:

    • Microsoft will usually replace it outright once they confirm no‑power condition

Microsoft officially supports out‑of‑warranty service and replacement options via the Surface support portal.
