- To transfer practical ownership of the new Surface to the granddaughter:
- Set it up in her name with her own Microsoft account when turning it on the first time. During initial setup, choose the option to sign in with or create a Microsoft account and use her email so the device is associated with her account, not the purchaser’s.
- If setup was already completed under a different account, sign out and add her account as the primary one, then move her files and settings. She can also use Windows Backup/restore or file transfer tools to move her own data later if needed. For setup details, see Set up your Surface.
- Regarding Microsoft Complete Protection transferring to the granddaughter:
- Microsoft Complete for Surface is tied to the device, not to who is using it. The coverage (technical support, extended warranty, accidental damage protection) stays with that Surface as long as the plan is valid.
- To use the coverage, the granddaughter should register/sign in with a Microsoft account at Device Support and view the registered Surface. If the device is not shown, it can be registered there so she can create service orders under the existing Microsoft Complete plan.
For any warranty or service needs, service requests for the Surface can be created at https://account.microsoft.com/devices by signing in with the account that has the device registered.
