HP Envy decided not to start and needs the bitlocker recovery key.

Despite registering the laptop in my Microsoft account, and it appearing under devices, the bitlocker recovery key does not appear. How do I get it?

    Hi Matthew Simon

I understand how frustrating it can be to be stuck at the BitLocker recovery screen, especially when the device is already showing under your Microsoft account but the recovery key is not listed there.

To help narrow this down, could you please confirm the following?

    • Was this HP Envy set up by you, by another person, or by a store/technician?
    • Have you ever signed in to this laptop with another Microsoft account?
    • Was the laptop ever connected to a work or school account?

In the meantime, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in the AI generated answer on your thread. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario.

If no key appears, sign out and try any other Microsoft account that may have been used on this laptop, including:

    • The account used during the first Windows setup
    • Another personal Microsoft account
    • A family member’s account, if they helped set up the PC

I know this isn't the news you were hoping for, but I wanted to make sure you got the most accurate information about your situation. If the recovery key still cannot be found after checking these places, the remaining option would be to reset or reinstall Windows from the Windows Recovery options. Please keep in mind that this will remove the data on the encrypted drive.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

BitLocker recovery keys are not created or stored automatically just because a device appears under a Microsoft account. The key is only available in the locations chosen when BitLocker was first enabled.

Use these steps to try to locate it:

    1. Check the Microsoft account backup
      • On another device, open a browser and go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
      • Sign in with the same Microsoft account used when setting up the HP Envy.
      • Look for an entry whose Key ID matches the first 8 digits shown on the BitLocker recovery screen and whose device name matches the HP Envy.
      • If found, use that 48‑digit key to unlock the drive.
    2. Check for a work or school account backup
      • If the HP Envy was ever joined to an organization (work or school), the key may be stored there instead of the personal Microsoft account.
      • On another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey.
      • Sign in with the work or school account.
      • Select Devices, expand the HP Envy, then select View BitLocker Keys and match by Key ID.
      • If the device is managed, IT support may need to retrieve the key.
    3. Check other backup locations used when BitLocker was turned on
      • Look for a printed copy of the BitLocker recovery key among important papers.
      • Check any USB flash drives that might contain a text file with the key (view from another PC if necessary).

If none of these locations contain the key and no one else (for example, an admin or previous owner) has it, the recovery key cannot be recreated. In that case, the only option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options, which will remove all files on the encrypted drive.
