Powerpoint won't open

I bought Microsoft Office 2024. PowerPoint is the only app that won't open. It requires a sign on, but once I put my account email in and hit enter, it just goes right back to the sign-in prompt as if I didn't enter anything. I've uninstalled all Microsoft apps, removed com.microsoft files and UEB, etc etc., and then re-installed my purchase. Still, no matter what I do, I can't access Power Point. Any ideas on how I can fix this? I'm getting to the point where I just want my money back for the week that I can't get my paid app to work... :/

    Hello Sharon M!

From your description, it seems that after purchasing Office 2024 for Mac, PowerPoint is the only app that doesn’t open properly. It keeps asking you to sign in but then returns to the same sign‑in prompt each time, even after you’ve done a full uninstall and cleanup.

In addition to the steps suggested by Q&A Assist, you can try using the official Mac License Removal Tool, then restart your Mac and attempt to activate Office again.

Note: The license removal tool only clears saved activation/licensing data on your Mac, it does not delete your purchase or invalidate your license. However, please make sure you still have access to the correct Microsoft account associated with your original Office purchase, as you will need to sign in again to reactivate it after running the tool.

If the issue continues, you may also consider creating a new macOS user profile to check whether the sign‑in loop is related to something within the current user profile (such as corrupted or blocked credentials).

Note: While the attached link above is not a Microsoft website, it is the official site of Apple.

    1. Apple menu () > System Settings > Users & Groups.
    2. Select Add User… (you may be prompted for your Mac password).
    3. Choose New User type (typically Standard for testing).
    4. Enter Full Name, (adjust Account Name if needed), set Password + Hint.
    5. Select Create User

After creating the new user, you can sign out of the current Mac account, sign into the new user, then try launching PowerPoint and signing in there. If it works in the new profile, it strongly suggests the issue is tied to the original profile’s saved credentials/identity cache (rather than the Office license itself).

Hope this could help you sort it out. Feel free to post back if you need more support!

Try the following sequence to fix PowerPoint sign-in and launch issues on Mac, focusing on clearing old identities and doing a clean reinstall.

    1. Quit all Office apps
    • Make sure Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote are all closed.
    1. Completely remove Office apps
    • Open Finder > Applications.
    • Use Command + click to select all Microsoft 365/Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote).
    • Ctrl+click the selection and choose Move to Trash.
    1. Remove Office-related data folders
    • In Finder, on the menu bar, select Go > Go to Folder… and enter:
      • ~/Library/Containers/
    • In that folder, move to Trash the folders starting with:
      • com.microsoft.Word
      • com.microsoft.Excel
      • com.microsoft.Powerpoint
      • com.microsoft.Outlook
      • com.microsoft.OneNote
    • Go back to ~/Library and open Group Containers.
    • If present, move these to Trash:
      • UBF8T346G9.ms
      • UBF8T346G9.Office
    1. Empty Trash and restart Mac
    • Empty the Trash to ensure all components are removed.
    • Restart the Mac to clear any cached processes.
    1. Reinstall Office 2024 / Microsoft 365
    • Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Office at the Microsoft account services page (for example, via the link provided in the context: https://account.microsoft.com/services).
    • From there, download and reinstall the Office apps for Mac.
    • After installation, open Word or Excel first, sign in when prompted, confirm activation, then open PowerPoint and sign in again if requested.

If PowerPoint still loops back to the sign-in prompt after this full removal and reinstall, contact Microsoft Support directly and reference that a full profile and container cleanup plus reinstall has already been performed.
