Forced to buy Microsoft 365

I purchased Microsoft office 2024 (stand alone version) in May, 2025 and installed it on a new Mac desktop using the newest Apple operating system. The Office products worked great till yesterday when they all give an error if I try to edit/save them that the only way to continue is to buy 365. The product I bought was a stand alone package. I feel cheated. Fortunately, Mac has their own office suite and I'm now learning how to use them. I read online that Apple is being blamed for this, but I don't know why when it worked for a year.

I have (or had!) Office Home 2024. The message at the top of each application open window says "Activate Microsoft 365 to Create and Edit. Your Office 2019 license is not supported with this version of the application." The 2019 version was on my mac when I got the new one and I do a "transfer" from old to new computer and then load new software.

Have you ever had Office 2019 installed on your Mac, or or any other device? I'm wondering how that version is suddenly showing up...

If you see Office 2024 listed in your Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/services or if you see it in the App Store (maybe you purchased via the App Store), then you should be able to reinstall. You should be able to download the correct release of Office from the update history page at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac .

Also/alternatively, the support article at https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/how-to-remove-office-license-files-on-a-mac-b032c0f6-a431-4dad-83a9-6b727c03b193 may be relevant.

Thank you for letting me know. It is highly likely that your Office Home 2024, which is a perpetual (one-time purchase) license, is not actually expired, but rather, your computer is mistakenly looking for a Microsoft 365 subscription license that has expired.

If you haven't already, I’d suggest is to uninstall any existing Office apps on your Mac to avoid conflict:

    Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services again.
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your license.
    • Find your Microsoft Office 2024 and click the "Install".
    • That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

If anything’s unclear or the "Install" option still doesn’t show, feel free to let me know. I’ll be happy to walk you through it!

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

    I got in with Chrome.

Office Home 2024 is listed in my subscriptions added May 2, 2025. Coincidentally, May 2 was one year to the day since I got the software and now it's turned off.

What is the exact error message shown? For example, do the Office apps report that they have become unlicensed?

Also, which is the particular product name? Office Home 2024? Office Home & Business 2024? These are the versions that are licensed for home use (applies to both macOS and Windows).

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Where did you purchase the license? Was it from the Microsoft website or a third-party seller?
    2. What is the exact product name you bought?
    3. Can you also check this: https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in. Do you see the specific product license listed there?

Also, what exact macOS version are you using now? And did this start after a recent macOS update?
