I marked an email as "Not Junk" and it disappeared. I searched for it, but it's nowhere. The email was deleted, is there a way to fix this? I needed that email, and the jankiness of this email provider is killing me man.

    Hello Kali

I understand how frustrating this is, especially when the message was important.

Marking “Not junk” should only move the email out of Junk, it does not delete it. If it’s not in Junk / Inbox / Deleted Items / Recoverable items, it’s very likely it was moved by a rule or another connected client.

Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? Also, to help me guide you better, could you please share a bit more information:

    • Right after you clicked “Not junk”, did the page refresh or show any message (for example, “Moved to Inbox”)?
    • Do you have any rules or Sweep settings configured in your mailbox that might move emails automatically?
      • (You can check under “Settings” > “Mail” > “Rules”)
    • Are you using Outlook.com only in the browser, or also connected to another app/device (Outlook desktop, phone app, etc.) that might be syncing/moving the email?
    • When you search, are you setting the scope to “All folders” and searching by sender + subject together?

In the meantime, please try the following:

    1, Check Inbox rules

Sometimes the email gets immediately moved by a rule after leaving Junk:

    • Go to “Settings” > “Mail” > “Rules”
    • Look for rules like: “move to folder”, “delete”, “archive”
    • If found, ask them to temporarily disable all rules, then check again.

2, Check Archive and custom folders

    Manually check:

    • “Archive” folder
    • Any custom folders (especially recently created ones)

Please feel free to let me know how it goes so I can assist you further. Thank you for your understanding.

Marking a message as Not junk should move it out of Junk, not delete it, so it is likely still recoverable if within the retention period.

Try these steps in Outlook.com / Outlook on the web:

    1. Check Junk Email again
      • Open the Junk Email folder and verify the message is not still there under a different date/time or grouped thread.
    2. Check Focused/Other tabs in Inbox
      • If Focused Inbox is on, the message may have been moved to Other instead of Focused.
      • Go to the Inbox, select the Other tab and look for the message. If found, select it and choose Move toMove to Focused inbox.
    3. Check Deleted Items and recover from there
      • Open the Deleted Items folder and look for the message. If found, select it and choose Restore (or MoveInbox).
      • If it is not visible in Deleted Items, at the top of that folder select Recover items deleted from this folder. If the message appears there, select it and choose Restore.
      • Items removed from Deleted Items are only recoverable for 30 days. After that, they cannot be recovered.
    4. Search all mail
      • Use the search box and search by sender, subject, or a unique phrase from the email, making sure the scope is set to search All folders.
    5. Check retention limits
      • Email in Deleted Items is automatically deleted after 30 days, and items removed from Deleted Items are only recoverable for another 30 days.
      • Email in Junk Email is automatically deleted after 30 days and is not recoverable once removed.

If the message has passed these retention windows or does not appear in Deleted Items or the recoverable items view, it cannot be restored.
