All apps associated with 365 Office will not work. Recently re-installed and paid 1 year subsciption. Now, cannot open any program. When contacting Microsoft we get AI and it asks for our Microsoft laptop ID. what does this mean?

Which exact error messages do you see?

Have you tried an Office repair?

The “Microsoft laptop ID” being requested by support or an automated assistant is typically a way to identify the specific device and installation that is having problems. It helps Microsoft tie the subscription and activation status to that particular PC, so they can see what’s installed, what account is in use, and what errors are occurring.

For a situation where none of the Microsoft 365 apps open even after reinstalling and paying for a one‑year subscription, the supported steps from the context are:

    1. Confirm the subscription and license type
      • Sign in at microsoft365.com or https://account.microsoft.com/services with the same account used to buy the subscription.
      • Verify that the subscription is active and that it is a plan that includes desktop apps (for example, Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Microsoft 365 Apps for business). Plans such as Microsoft 365 Basic do not include desktop apps; they only allow use of the web versions and OneDrive.
    2. Make sure the correct product is installed
      • Check that the installed Office matches the subscription (for example, Microsoft 365 Apps for business vs. a volume‑licensed Office Professional Plus).
      • If the wrong edition or bitness is installed, run the Microsoft 365 Uninstall troubleshooter to remove Office, restart the device, then reinstall from the correct account as described in the documentation.
    3. Run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (activation troubleshooter)
      • On the same Windows 10 or later PC where Microsoft 365 is installed, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter using the Get Help app (via the “Start” button provided in the documentation).
      • Follow the prompts; it will detect and attempt to fix activation issues that can prevent apps from opening correctly.
    4. If activation repair fails, fully remove and reinstall Office
      • Deactivate the existing Office install for that device.
      • Use the “easy fix” / uninstall tool to completely remove Office.
      • Restart the PC (not just shut down and power on).
      • Sign back in at microsoft365.com or the account services page with the subscription account and reinstall Office from there.

If the subscription is Microsoft 365 Basic or another plan without desktop apps, the desktop programs will not work even if a subscription is active. In that case, use the web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint at microsoft365.com, or upgrade to a plan that includes desktop apps.
