I canceled my Entra ID and Azure trials, submitted my account for closure, but am still getting billed

Hi! I created a new Entra ID trial and Azure trial to test some features in a new tenant; and once I sorted my testing, I marked the account for deletion.

Last month and again today, I was billed $9.45 for something. The account was still marked for closure/deletion, so I re-opened it and confirmed no active subscriptions exist. How can I troubleshoot/ensure I’m not billed again?

Use the following checks and steps to troubleshoot and stop further charges.

    1. Understand what can and can’t be canceled
      • A Microsoft Entra ID Free subscription is automatically created with the billing account and can’t be canceled. It remains even when Azure trials are canceled and is required to access and manage billing. It is free and should not generate usage charges by itself.
      • Azure trial or pay-as-you-go subscriptions must be canceled first and then deleted after the waiting period.
    2. Verify there are truly no billable subscriptions left In the tenant where testing was done:
      • In the Azure portal or Microsoft Entra admin center, go to All billing subscriptions and confirm:
        • Any Azure trial / pay-as-you-go subscriptions are in Canceled or Deleted state.
        • Only Microsoft Entra ID Free remains, and no other paid Entra or Microsoft 365 subscriptions (like Entra ID P1/P2, Microsoft 365 Business, EMS, etc.) are present.
      • If any Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscriptions exist:
        1. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Billing > Your products.
        2. For each paid subscription, select Cancel subscription.
        3. After cancellation, select Delete for that subscription and confirm. This moves it to Disabled and then Deprovisioned, after which it can no longer be billed.
    3. Confirm Azure subscription deletion timing
      • After canceling an Azure subscription, it can only be deleted after a short delay:
        • Free trial or pay-as-you-go: Delete subscription becomes available three days after cancellation.
        • Other Azure subscription types: deletion is handled through the cancellation lifecycle; they can’t be directly deleted.
      • Ensure that any Azure subscription associated with the tenant has passed this window and is actually deleted (or fully deprovisioned) and not just canceled/disabled.
    4. Check for other tenants or accounts
      • Charges may come from a different tenant or Microsoft account than the one that was closed.
      • Sign in to the Azure portal and Microsoft 365 admin center with any other work/school or personal accounts that might have been used, and repeat the subscription checks above.
    5. Investigate the specific charge and invoice
      • Use the Microsoft account billing tools to investigate the charge and confirm which subscription and tenant it belongs to. Follow the guidance in “How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft” from the billing support article referenced in context.
      • Also verify that the correct Microsoft account is being checked, as charges can appear under a different sign-in than expected.
    6. If charges continue or you can’t identify the source
      • Because tenant-specific billing details and refunds require access to account data, open a support request with Microsoft billing/support from the Azure portal or Microsoft account billing site and provide:
        • The invoice number (for example, G150200417).
        • The tenant ID.
        • Confirmation that Azure and Microsoft 365 subscriptions in that tenant are canceled/deleted.
      • If the billing account still shows Microsoft Entra ID Free only and no other subscriptions, but the card is still charged, support can investigate and, if appropriate, process a refund.

These steps ensure that all billable subscriptions are canceled/deleted and that any remaining charges are traced to the correct account or subscription.
