I have personal One Drive free version. I am trying to unlink my email address from this free version, so I can use family 365, but am unable to do this.

May I please know what you mean by "Personal OneDrive free version"?

With a Microsoft account, you receive 5 GB of OneDrive cloud storage and 15 GB of Outlook email storage. These limits are the same for all users, so I’m not entirely sure what you mean by the "Personal OneDrive free version" in this context.

If you’d like to increase your storage, you can upgrade to a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, which will automatically expand your available storage.

Personal Microsoft accounts and Microsoft 365 work or school accounts cannot be merged, but they can be used side by side. The email address itself is not “locked” to the free OneDrive; instead, that same Microsoft account can also be the one that receives the Microsoft 365 Family benefits.

To use the 1 TB storage from Microsoft 365 Family with that email address, ensure the following:

1. The Microsoft 365 Family owner has shared the subscription with that same email address.
2. Accept the sharing invitation sent to that email address and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account.
3. After acceptance, that account’s OneDrive quota will reflect the Family subscription storage.

If there is a second, separate Microsoft account using the same email address (for example, a work/school account or a duplicate personal account), they cannot be merged. In that case, sign in with the correct personal Microsoft account when accessing OneDrive and Microsoft 365 Family.

If OneDrive on a device is still showing the old/free quota, unlink and relink the account on that device so it picks up the updated storage:

1. On Windows/Mac, select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
2. Select the OneDrive Help and Settings icon > Settings.
3. Go to the Account tab.
4. Select Unlink this PC, then Unlink account.
5. Sign back in with the personal Microsoft account that has the Microsoft 365 Family storage.

This does not delete any files; it only disconnects and reconnects the sync client so it uses the correct subscription storage.
