To move Microsoft 365 Family (or another home subscription) or a one-time-purchase Office to a new laptop after a hardware failure, use the account-based install and, if needed, phone activation.
- On the new laptop, sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the Office Family subscription or one-time purchase.
- Go to the services and subscriptions page for that account (for example, via the Microsoft account portal) and start the Office install from there. This associates the new device with the existing license.
- Run the installer and complete setup on the new laptop.
If this is a one-time-purchase Office (for example, Office Home & Student, Home & Business, or Professional) and an error appears about reaching the maximum number of activations:
- Confirm that the license terms allow transfer to a new device:
- Open any Office app on the new laptop after install (such as Word).
- Go to File > Account > About [program name] > View the Microsoft Software License Terms.
- For Office 2019 or 2016, see section 3. Transfer to a Third Party for transfer rules.
- Because the old laptop cannot be turned on to deactivate Office, use phone activation on the new laptop:
- Start an Office app on the new laptop.
- When activation fails, choose the option to activate by telephone (if presented) and follow the prompts.
- If automated activation does not resolve it, stay on the line to reach a support agent and explain that the old device is no longer usable.
- After successful activation by phone, ensure Office is no longer used on the old device (it is effectively retired due to the hardware failure).
If a phone number is needed or activation by phone is not clearly offered in the product UI, contact Microsoft support for home users:
- Use the Get Help experience for home users: open the page for customer service phone numbers and select Get Help under Home Users. Describe that Office needs to be activated on a new device after hardware failure; the workflow will either provide self-help steps, chat, or a callback option.
- Alternatively, use the Office support contact options for Microsoft 365 for home to reach support via chat or callback.
For non-subscription Office (one-time purchase), callback support is available specifically for activation issues. For full callback support beyond activation, upgrading to a Microsoft 365 subscription is required.
