Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Because the old PayPal account is cancelled and the subscription is still linked to it, the payment method must be changed from the Microsoft account side before paying the past-due amount.
Use this sequence:
- Go to Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
- Locate the subscription that is past due or currently using the old PayPal method.
- If you see a Pay now button but cannot proceed because of the old PayPal method, first change the payment method for the subscription:
- Follow the guidance in Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options (from the Services & subscriptions page, choose the subscription, then go to its payment/billing options and select a different payment method).
- If you cannot remove the old PayPal option because of a past-due balance, see the note in Troubleshoot payment option issues: a past-due balance can block removal. In that case, you must assign a new valid payment method to the subscription on the Services & subscriptions page so the balance can be charged.
- Add a new payment method (valid credit card, bank card, or PayPal with a valid funding source) to your Microsoft account if needed. Use the flow described in Change the payment method or credit card linked to your Microsoft account from the billing pages.
- After the new payment method is attached to the subscription, go back to Services & subscriptions, select the past-due subscription, choose Pay now, and complete the payment with the new method as described in Pay for a past-due Microsoft subscription.
Notes based on the provided guidance:
- Gift cards, subscription cards, or Microsoft account balance cannot be used to pay a past-due subscription.
- If you get an error when changing/removing payment options, it is often because of a past-due balance; resolving that by assigning a valid method is required.
If these steps still do not allow changing the payment method (for example, the UI blocks any change because of the linked, cancelled PayPal), contact Microsoft billing support from the support site so an agent can adjust the subscription’s payment method on the backend.
