How to cancel minecraft education - Microsoft 365 support not working

I used a personal account to access minecraft education a long time ago and I no longer remember my details to cancel it. I know I need to contact Microsoft 365 admin to restore access first, but I have tried calling both numbers on the Microsoft 365 admin page for support in doing this (Australia), but the recorded message incorrectly assumes I want an xbox refund and gives me the details to do this. When I hang up and call back, it takes me straight to the comment about xbox refunds and there is no option to change the dialogue. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? I would just cancel the subscription with my bank, but my accounts merged over the last 12 months so I can no longer access statements to see which account I paid from.

    Hi @Amanda Harrison,

Good day. I’m sorry to hear about the difficulty you’ve been experiencing when trying to access your account and cancel the Minecraft Education subscription.

Minecraft Education is managed under a Microsoft 365 environment, which means the subscription is linked to a tenant created during the initial setup. When a tenant is created, a default domain in the format yourtenant.onmicrosoft.com is automatically assigned and used for administrative access, including managing and cancelling subscriptions. Because of this setup, access, recovery, and cancellation typically follow the processes used for Microsoft 365 business (work or school) accounts rather than standard personal accounts.

With that in mind, you may consider the following steps, which might help you regain access and proceed with cancelling the subscription:

1/ Cancel the subscription through the Microsoft 365 admin center using the account credentials associated with the tenant

If you’re unsure which account was used, it may be helpful to revisit the original purchase or confirmation email. You can search across all folders using keywords such as “Microsoft” or “onmicrosoft.com”, as this may help identify the account linked to your Minecraft Education subscription.

Once you are able to identify the correct account, you could try signing in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with those credentials. From there, the subscription can typically be cancelled under Billing > Your products, following the standard cancellation steps for Microsoft 365 subscriptions. For more information, please refer to: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn.

    2/ Contact Microsoft support

If you’re unable to locate or access the account, the next step would be to reach out to Microsoft Support so they can assist further.

I understand that you’ve already attempted to reach support by phone without success. In this situation, you may consider contacting Global Customer Support again and following the script below to help navigate the automated phone system more effectively.

During the phone call, you will need to provide the information associated with your subscription, such as your billing details, phone number, and an alternate email address, etc. This information allows the Data Protection team to verify your identity and securely assist you in regaining access to your account.

In some regions, the initial interaction may be automated, so here’s a general idea of how the conversation might go to help you prepare:

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

In some countries, it is an automated conversation like:

IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?

    You: Loss of access.

IVR: What kind of product do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business.

IVR confirmation: education or company account?

    You: For companies

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    You: Yes.

IVR: Do you have another administrator in your organization?

    You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... Service request?

You: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me directly to the Data Protection Team.

Please note that forum moderators do not have access to user account settings and cannot assist with logging in, resetting passwords, or changing access rights. While we do not have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend-related issues, we’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of our responsibilities.

3/ Create a new tenant to submit a support ticket (Alternative method)

Please note that the trial tenant is intended only to help you create a support ticket for your existing Minecraft Education tenant. It is not meant to replace or serve as your primary tenant.

If you still cannot reach a live agent, there is still a workaround, you might consider registering for a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription.

To set up a new tenant, please follow these steps:

    • Visit Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365 and select "try for free" under a business subscription. This would allow you to create a new tenant following the prompts provided. Once set up, you can access the admin console of the new tenant and submit a support ticket requesting to speak with the Data Protection team on behalf of your Minecraft Education tenant.
    • Create a support ticket: In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Help & Support.
    • In your ticket description, you'll need to clearly explain that you're trying to regain access to your previous Microsoft Education tenant and need help from the Data Protection team.

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your issue is resolved, as this will help you avoid any accidental billing. You may prefer the following resource for detailed instructions: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn.

I hope this helps you regain access to your account quickly. I'm glad to assist and truly hope the information provided has been useful. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you need further assistance.

Because the original personal Microsoft account and billing details are unknown, the most reliable path is to stop the subscription from the Microsoft side and, if needed, work with billing support rather than phone menus that route to Xbox.

    Use these steps and checks:

    1. Check all possible Microsoft accounts for the subscription
      1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with each personal email address that might have been used.
      2. Under Services & subscriptions, look for any Minecraft Education / Microsoft 365 / other Microsoft subscription.
      3. If the subscription is found, select Manage, then Cancel or Upgrade or Cancel, and follow the prompts to complete cancellation.
      4. If instead of Manage it shows Turn on recurring billing, the subscription is already set to expire and will not be charged again.
    2. If the subscription is not visible under any account
      1. Use the Manage your payments page to investigate unknown charges if you still have access to any card or bank that might have been used: Manage your payments.
      2. Follow the guidance in How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft (linked from the “Unable to cancel your Microsoft subscription” article) to match charges to a Microsoft account.
    3. If cancellation through the portal is still not possible
      1. Follow the standard self‑service cancellation flow for other Microsoft subscriptions (this applies to things like ClipChamp or additional OneDrive storage and is the same pattern used for most consumer subscriptions):
      2. If the subscription was purchased through a third party (for example, Google Play or Apple App Store), cancellation and refund must be requested through that store’s support, not Microsoft:
    4. If still being charged after cancelling
      • Verify that cancellation was done more than 2 days before the billing date and that the correct Microsoft account was used. Guidance is in Unable to cancel your Microsoft subscription – Why am I still being charged after cancelling my Microsoft subscription?
    5. When self‑service fails and phone support misroutes
      • Use the web support path instead of phone:
        • Go to Contact Microsoft Support.
        • Sign in, describe the issue (for example, “Minecraft Education / Microsoft 365 subscription on a lost personal account – need billing help, not Xbox”), and select Get HelpContact Support.
        • Choose a billing/support option such as chat in the browser. This avoids the Xbox phone menu and connects directly with an agent who can look up the subscription by payment details.

If the subscription was created in a country that supports prorated refunds (for example, Canada, Israel, Korea, Turkey, or certain longer-term subscriptions in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, or Portugal), cancellation may also make a partial refund possible, as described in the refund article.
