Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Dear @Jon Lehman,
Good day, and I appreciate the clear explanation of your concern.
Below are step-by-step instructions covering first time sign in, changing the temporary password and adding the account to Outlook, including scenarios where Outlook is already in use.
Step 1: Sign in to the Microsoft 365 work account for the first time
Before starting, please ensure the web browser and Microsoft 365 applications are up to date.
Open a web browser, then go to the browser settings and clear browsing data. Set the time range to All time to avoid issues caused by outdated cache.
Go to https://www.office.com
Sign in using the new work email address and the temporary password that was provided.
Once signed in, select Apps > Choose Outlook to open Outlook on the web and confirm the mailbox is accessible.
Step 2: Change the temporary password
Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com
Sign in using the new work email address and the current temporary password.
From the left menu, select Change password.
Enter the temporary password, then create and confirm a new password and select Submit to save the changes.
Note: This step is required and should be completed before signing in to Outlook on a desktop application.
Step 3: Add the new account to Outlook on a computer
- Scenario 1: First time using Outlook desktop app
Open the New or Classic Outlook desktop application.
If a welcome screen appears, enter the new work email address and select Connect.
Sign in using the new password that was created after the initial login.
Follow the on-screen instructions. Outlook will automatically configure the mailbox and create a new profile.
During sign in, a message may appear indicating that the organization wants to manage the device.
- Select Yes or Allow to register the device and apply company security policies.
- Or select No, sign in to this app only. This allows access to Outlook without enrolling the device.
Note: Both options allow access to Outlook. The correct choice depends on your organization’s IT policy.
Once setup is complete, Outlook will open and start syncing emails.
- Scenario 2: User already using the New Outlook desktop app
Open the New Outlook desktop app on windows.
Select File > Account info > Choose Add account.
When prompted, sign in using the new email address and the updated password.
Note: This option is only available in the New Outlook desktop app.
- Scenario 3: User already using Classic Outlook
Open Classic Outlook.
Select File > Add Account.
Enter the new email address and follow the prompts to sign in with the updated password.
Outlook will automatically configure the account once sign in is successful.
