Name discrepancy between microsoft profile and register documents

If you have an exam scheduled, then you may be blocked from changing your name and you should see an error message and a link to contact the Credentials Support to request a name change.

To align the name on a Microsoft profile with official registration documents, the update must be done in the appropriate account profile, and in some cases through support or an admin:

1. If this is a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, consumer Microsoft 365, Windows sign-in, etc.):
   • Go to Your info for the Microsoft account and sign in: use the Sign in link under Personal account in "How to change your user account name".
   • On the Edit name screen, update the first and last name so they match the registered/legal documents, complete the Captcha, and select Save.
   • It can take up to 24 hours for the new name to appear everywhere in Windows and Microsoft 365 apps.
   • If the display name on the Microsoft account itself needs to be updated (for email, Outlook.com groups, etc.), sign in to the Microsoft account page, select Edit name, change the display name to match the registered name, and select Save. Note that this does not change an Xbox gamertag.
2. If this is a work or school account (Microsoft 365 organization / Entra ID):
   • Sign in to the work or school account profile page using the "Work/school account" path in "How to change your user account name".
   • Some organizations do not allow users to change their own names. In that case, contact the IT admin or HR department and request that they update the name in Microsoft Entra ID and any connected HR system so it matches the registration documents.
   • Name changes in organizational accounts may also take up to 24 hours to propagate across Microsoft 365 apps.
3. If the name is specifically on Microsoft Learn (certifications, exams, transcripts):
   • Open the Microsoft Learn profile, select the profile icon (top right) → Settings.
   • Under Personal info, username, and URL, update the display name so it matches the registered/legal name used for exams and certificates, then select Save.
   • For certification exams where the legal name must exactly match government ID, follow the guidance in the Learn profile management article (for example, entering the legal name exactly as on the ID, and using _ in the last name field if there is no legal last name).
   • If the legal name field was entered incorrectly for an exam registration and cannot be edited, use the Microsoft credentials support channel referenced in the Q&A (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/credentials/support/help) to request a correction.
4. Guidance for name fields in Microsoft Entra ID (organizational accounts):
   • Ensure First name and Last name reflect the name expected on the profile and in meeting transcriptions, which may be the preferred name rather than strictly the legal name.
   • Use Display name to follow organizational naming policies (for example, Last, First), but do not use it as an unrelated alias that differs from first/last name, to avoid inconsistencies across apps.
   • If HR-driven provisioning is used, coordinate with HR so the legal name from HR systems is synced correctly into Entra ID.

If sign-in problems occur while trying to change the name, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper linked in the documentation. If organizational policies block editing, the only path is through the organization’s admin/HR.
