Hi STU ADAMS
For personal Microsoft accounts, Microsoft is phasing out SMS as a method of authentication and account recovery. You can learn more in the official Microsoft Support article: Microsoft to stop sending SMS codes for personal accounts.
In addition, Microsoft states that, for increased security, a new phone number can no longer be added as a sign-in verification method. Instead, I recommend using Microsoft Authenticator or another available verification method, such as a passkey or verified email.
To set up Microsoft Authenticator and enable two-step verification:
- Sign in to your Microsoft account Security page.
- Select Manage how I sign in.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify, then choose Use an app.
- Follow the prompts to set up Microsoft Authenticator.
- Under Additional security, turn on Two-step verification.
I hope this clarifies the available verification options.
