How to access Microsoft 365 A1 as a teacher?

Hello, I am a teacher in a rural school in which there is no agreement or license with Microsoft, however, being a teacher in function, I would like to use this tool, however the email I currently use for my work as a teacher does not allow me to access this resource. I would like to obtain information on how I can obtain this product, in this case with my freelance teacher email.

I understand you are seeking access to Microsoft 365 A1 to support your teaching work using a freelance email address.

Unfortunately, you cannot sign up for Microsoft 365 A1 using a personal or freelance email address (such as Gmail, Outlook.com, or a standard commercial domain).

Microsoft 365 A1 is an institutional license strictly reserved for accredited academic organizations. Eligibility is tied to a verified school domain (e.g., ⁠.edu⁠ or an officially recognized school domain) rather than individual teacher status. 

How to obtain Microsoft 365 for your work:

Option 1: Have Your School Register (Free A1 Plan)

  • Ask your school administration or IT department to register the school's domain at the Microsoft Education Sign-Up Portal.
  • Once Microsoft verifies the institution's academic eligibility, the school can assign free Office 365 A1 for Faculty licenses to all teachers. 

Option 2: Free alternatives for Personal/Freelance Emails

  • Microsoft 365 Free Web Apps: You can use your personal/freelance Microsoft account to access free web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Microsoft Teams for personal use at office.com.
  • Microsoft 365 Personal / Business Basic: If you require custom domain management or additional business features independently, you can subscribe to a Microsoft 365 Personal or Business plan.

    Not all schools or students or teachers qualify for the A1 plan.

    To qualify for the free Microsoft 365 A1 plan, an institution must pass a strict academic verification process by Microsoft.

    Who qualifies: Accredited K-12 schools, school districts, colleges, public libraries, and universities.

    Who does NOT qualify: Homeschools, private non-accredited daycare centers, commercial training centers, and alumni associations.
