I have tried every avenue possible for my work/school account through my domain host. The authenticator simply will not generate a 6-digit passcode and I am unable to login for support. My domain host can't help me and there is no way to contact Microsoft so I am going around and around in circles. PLEASE HELP THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING

The problem is that 'other verification options' is not available. The only option I am provided with is to use the authenticator app. If there were other verification options available I wouldn't have had to contact you or the administrator. But I am still stuck in the 'pass the buck' loop of Microsoft and my administrator saying neither can fix the issue.

    Hi @Kristy Lund-White

If the correct work or school account is already in Authenticator but it still does not provide the required 6-digit code, and the sign-in page does not offer another verification method, this is likely an MFA registration issue on the Microsoft Entra account.

If you have another Global Administrator in the same Microsoft 365 tenant, that administrator can reset your authentication methods and allow you to register Authenticator again using the guidance Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

If you are the only administrator and are completely locked out, there generally isn't a self-service method to bypass the MFA requirement, you will need to contact Microsoft Support directly. A support agent can create a support ticket for the affected tenant and, if necessary, escalate the case to the Data Protection team, which can assist with restoring access to the tenant.

You can find the appropriate support phone number for your region here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

(While calling, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore it and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

In some regions, the initial interaction may be automated, so here’s a general idea of how the conversation might go to help you prepare:

    • What kind of problem are you experiencing?
    • Answer: Authenticator
    • What products do you use?
    • Answer: Office 365 for business
    • Is this for an education or company account?
    • Answer: For companies
    • Are you an administrator?
    • Answer: Yes
    • Are there any other administrators in your organization?
    • Answer: No. I am the only admin in my tenant
    • Do you need a... Service request?
    • Answer: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.

In case the phone line is not supportive, you can consider directly submitting a support request as a helpful workaround:

-Create a temporary Microsoft 365 tenant using a trial license: Go to Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing and click Try for free to set up a temporary Microsoft 365 tenant with a trial license.

-Use this new account to sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and submit a support request on behalf of your primary (locked) account.

-Click Help & Support > then choose Create a support request.

Note: This method doesn't require you to use your new account for your business. Instead, it allows you to create a temporary global administrator account so you can submit a support request, as your original global administrator account is locked out due to issues with multi-factor authentication. The trial account is free for one month. Be sure to delete it after submitting your support request to avoid any automatic renewals or charges from Microsoft.

For further instructions, you can follow this guide: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn.

Since this is a user-to-user support forum, I do not have access to internal databases or the ability to escalate cases directly to Microsoft’s internal teams. Therefore, please kindly contact the Microsoft Support team for the most efficient help.

For a work or school account, the fastest path is:

    1. On the sign-in page, select Other verification options or Use a different MFA method if it appears. Try another registered method instead of the Authenticator code.
    2. If Microsoft Authenticator shows an error or does not complete sign-in:
      • Open the app and confirm it launches normally and the account is listed.
      • Update Microsoft Authenticator from the device app store.
      • If this is a work or school device, also update Company Portal and confirm the device is compliant.
      • Restart the device.
      • Make sure the app is unlocked, notifications are enabled, the device has internet access, and date/time are correct.
      • If needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
    3. If repeated sign-in attempts were made, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication may temporarily block more attempts. Wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method.
    4. If the issue is with SMS or email verification instead of app approval, avoid repeated code requests. Check whether the phone blocks texts from unknown numbers, whether the inbox is full, and whether the security info is correct on the Security info page.
    5. If the phone was lost, stolen, or the app can no longer be used, sign in with a different method if available. Otherwise, the organization’s Help desk or IT administrator must clear or reset the MFA settings.
    6. If the account is stuck in a setup loop or no working verification method is available, the organization’s IT admin or Help desk is the required escalation path. They are the ones who can reset multifactor authentication settings or help register a new method.
    7. Before escalating, capture logs from Authenticator: open the app menu, go to Settings, and use Send feedback.

If the sign-in error is specifically "Something went wrong. [4s8qz]", the documented order is: wait a few seconds, open Authenticator and verify it is responsive, update the app, update Company Portal if applicable, then restart the device.

If the message is "Authentication did not complete", check these specific causes: app locked, silent/disabled notifications, outdated app, network issue, incorrect date/time, or forgotten credentials.

If no alternate sign-in method is available and the domain host cannot reset the work/school account’s MFA, the remaining supported path is the organization’s IT administrator or Help desk.
