If the Surface shows Automatic Repair or a Recovery screen, use these steps in order:

1. On the Automatic Repair screen, select Restart.
   • If Windows starts, install the latest Surface and Windows updates.
2. If that does not work, select Advanced options > Continue.
   • This exits the recovery options and tries to continue to Windows.
   • If Windows starts, install the latest Surface and Windows updates.
3. If the Automatic Repair screen appears again, select Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
   • Follow the on-screen instructions so Windows can try to find and fix the problem.
   • If Windows starts, install the latest Surface and Windows updates.
4. If the Surface freezes during Automatic Repair, use a USB recovery drive for Surface.
   • Shut down the Surface.
   • Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port.
   • Press and hold Volume Down while pressing and releasing Power.
   • When the Surface logo appears, release Volume Down.
5. If the device is stuck on the Recovery screen, the USB recovery drive steps are also the recommended reset path:
   • Insert the USB recovery drive.
   • Press and hold Volume Down while pressing and releasing Power.
   • Release Volume Down when the Surface logo appears.
   • Check whether Windows starts.
6. If Windows still does not start after these steps, use a service option:
   • Send to Microsoft
   • Get in-person support
   • Self-repair if technically experienced and equipped for it

• Surface turns on but is stuck on a logo screen
