Hi Microsoft Support,

I’m having trouble accessing my account because it is asking for a verification code from Microsoft Authenticator. The Authenticator app was previously set up on my old phone, but I no longer have access to the app because my phone was reset/updated and the Authenticator data was removed.

I’m the owner of the account, but I currently cannot complete the two-step verification because I cannot generate the Authenticator code. I would like to recover access to my account and set up Microsoft Authenticator again on my current phone.

Please let me know what verification or recovery options are available to confirm my identity and regain access to my account.

Thank you for your assistance.

    Dear @stephenne medrano

If you don't have access to your old phone, first check whether you have another authentication method available, such as SMS, phone call, a FIDO2/security key, or another registered authentication method.

If you don't have any other authentication method available, the only option for a Work or School account is to contact your organization's administrator. They can reset your MFA/Authenticator registration so you can register Microsoft Authenticator again on your new phone.

If this is a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, etc.) rather than a Work or School account, you'll need to go through the Microsoft account recovery process to regain access. Microsoft Support.

If the account is a personal Microsoft account, recovery depends on whether any alternate sign-in or verification method is still available.

    1. Try the Sign-in Helper first. It can identify common sign-in problems and guide the next steps.
    2. If the password is known but some security info is still accessible, sign in to Advanced security options or the Security tab, then:
      • select Add a new way to sign in or verify
      • confirm the new method with the security code sent there
      • remove the old verification method that is no longer accessible
    3. If the password is known but access to all security info is lost, start sign-in and at Verify your identity select I don't have any of these, then follow the steps to replace security info. After replacement, sign-in is blocked for 30 days.
    4. If the password is not known and no security info is accessible, use the account recovery form. Complete it from a device and location previously used for that account if possible.
    5. If two-step verification is turned on and there is no access to any alternate verification method, support agents cannot send reset links or change account details.
    6. After access is restored, add Microsoft Authenticator again on the current phone. If a restored account in Authenticator shows Action required, open the account in Authenticator, tap the account tile, sign in, and complete the extra verification.

If the account is a work or school account:

    1. Try Sign in another way and use any other registered method if available.
    2. If the phone was lost or reset and no other method works, contact the organization’s Help desk / IT admin to clear the two-step verification settings. After that, registration for two-factor verification is prompted again at the next sign-in.
    3. Support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details for work or school account verification issues.

Important: do not remove or replace all security info at the same time unless necessary, because the account may be restricted for 30 days.
