I can't do anything on the Microsoft Authenticator App because it asks me to put in a code that sends to the app or ask to verify something, nothing come up on the app if in the notification, leading me to not be able to do a thing about it but complain. Every button takes me to a site that I have to log into, I can't log in at all because your Authentication App is a big loophole.

Hi @Katelynn Bombard,

First, I'd like to mention that I'm an Independent Advisor, not a Microsoft employee. I'm here to help based on my experience with similar issues and hopefully point you toward the quickest resolution.

From what you've described, this does appear to be an MFA (multi-factor authentication) issue, where the Microsoft Authenticator app is not receiving the approval prompt or code needed to complete the sign-in process. This can unfortunately create a situation where you're unable to access either your account or the settings needed to fix the problem yourself.

In this situation, since you are using a college/school account, the best course of action is to contact your school's IT administrator. They have the necessary permissions to reset your multi-factor authentication settings and help restore access to your account.

You can ask them to follow the steps outlined in the following guide to revoke your existing MFA sessions and require MFA re-registration: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

User's image

This process typically takes only a few minutes. It clears the existing authentication registration and sign-in sessions, and the next time you sign in, you should be prompted to set up Microsoft Authenticator again from scratch on your phone.

As this is a user-to-user support forum, I can only provide guidance based on experience with similar cases and cannot make changes to your account directly. Because your account is managed by your educational institution, only your school's IT administrators have the authority to modify these security settings on your behalf.

That said, I sincerely hope this information helps point you to the right support team so that you can regain access to your account as quickly as possible and continue your studies without further interruption.

Thank you again for your time and understanding.

For a college account, this is usually a work/school MFA issue. Use this order:

    1. Open Microsoft Authenticator and check whether the college account is listed and active.
      • If the app opens but nothing appears, swipe down to refresh.
      • If the app is locked, unlock it first.
    2. Check notification delivery on the phone.
      • Make sure Do Not Disturb or Quiet mode is off.
      • In phone settings, make sure Authenticator notifications are enabled, including sound or vibration.
      • If notifications are silent or disabled, approval prompts may not appear.
    3. Check connectivity and device state.
      • Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
      • Make sure Airplane mode is off.
      • If using a VPN, disconnect it and try again.
      • Verify the phone date and time are correct.
    4. Update the app.
      • Install the latest Microsoft Authenticator version.
      • Microsoft does not support app versions more than 12 months old.
      • If this is a school-managed device, also update Company Portal and make sure the device is compliant.
    5. If the sign-in screen offers it, choose an alternate method.
      • Select Sign in another way or I can’t use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now.
      • If allowed by the college, use another registered method such as SMS, phone call, email, or a verification code.
    6. If some accounts notify but the college account does not, remove that account from Authenticator and add it again, allowing notifications.
    7. If the phone was replaced, lost, broken, or no other method is available, contact the college IT help desk and ask them to clear/reset MFA settings or require re-register of multi-factor authentication.
      • After they clear the old methods, the next sign-in should prompt for MFA setup again.
      • This is the required path when the account is managed by the school and only Authenticator is configured.
    8. If the issue continues after the checks above, send logs from the app for diagnostics:
      • In Authenticator, open the top-level menu and select Send feedback.
      • Then contact the college IT admin/help desk.

If repeated sign-in attempts were made, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block more attempts. In that case, wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
